Introducing Hubs : your next step?
Over the next few weeks we are going to be introducing each of our Hubs.
What is a Hub?
Good question!
Right now we have 4 hubs, and they’re all pretty different….
Youth Hub is a gathering of teenagers playing games, sharing life, exploring the bible and praying together.
Family Hub is a gathering of all ages using games, craft, bible stories and prayer to get closer to God together.
Men’s Chat is simply an open forum meeting in a local Fight Gym for guys to chat about anything they want to from faith to politics to what we saw on TV.
Coffee Corner is a café space on Monday mornings for people connected with George Carey school to share drinks, snacks and conversation.
So….are Hubs church? If I’m not a Christian should I stay away….would I want to be there or not?
Another good question!
Let me answer like this….it might help you understand where we’re coming from…
Life is a journey.
A journey best walked with others. Happy times are happier, hard times easier, when we share them with other people.
Hubs are our way of creating spaces for people to connect together and walk this journey of life.
So are they church?
Interestingly, Jesus didn’t talk that much about church. But he did do a lot of walking.
As Jesus walked his journey of life, he called people to follow Him.
Jesus seemed far less interested in whether someone was “in or out” of some club or religion…but far more interested in what direction they were walking in. Jesus told people to “repent”…which literally means, “turn around and walk the other way.”
Were people walking toward Him, getting closer? No matter what their starting point. Or were they walking away or refusing to move at all? The religious leaders at the time, who were very concerned with whether someone was in/out…they’re the ones Jesus had a problem with.
If you read the stories of Jesus, you’ll see that people followed Him.
Some people gathered in crowds when Jesus arrived in town. They probably didn’t know much about him or what to think of him, but they were interested enough to take a step closer at least for a short time.
Some of those people kept following Jesus even when he moved to another place. Whole crowds climbed into boats when he crossed a lake or walked down the road to be with him.
Other people pushed through those crowds to get even closer to Jesus. People who were desperate because their life was in crisis…often through physical, mental or spiritual brokenness. Everyone who came to Jesus was not only healed, but discovered their identity and the love of Father God.
Then still others made a public decision to follow Jesus as “disciples”…to become an “apprentice” – learning from his teaching, imitating his life. Jesus described this as entering “the kingdom of God” which was like being “born again.” Not just learning a rule-book to follow, but beginning a whole new life in a whole new kingdom where Jesus is king.
And those who make that decision join a world-wide family called “church.”
Do you relate to any of those types of people?
Our heart as a church community is to create spaces for every person, no matter where they are starting from, to be able to walk this journey of life with others and to take their next step toward Jesus.
Every Hub is a place for people to do that.
Everyone and anyone is welcome to join in.
What each Hub is like is shaped by the people who are in them…
Some are more like “church” because they have more disciples – Christians – in them, or people exploring whether they want to be: Family Hub and Youth Hub.
Some like Men’s Chat and Coffee Corner are at a different place in their journey….they’re spaces to help people connect, share life, and explore faith.
And guess what, Hubs can start wherever and whenever a few people simply want to get together to share life and take a next step discovering Jesus.
If you would like to join an existing Hub, start a new one, or you’re not sure – please get in touch and we’d love to chat with you 😊
